Canadian invoicing · Canada and Quebec
Built for Canadian invoicing and tax record requirements
Invoice North is designed for Canadian freelancers, contractors, consultants and small businesses that need to create professional invoices, track GST/HST and keep organized business records.
The free guest generator creates downloadable invoices. Saving invoice history, payments and expenses requires an account; keep your own copies of guest invoices.
GST/HST-ready invoicing
Invoice North supports GST and HST configuration on invoices. With an account, you can:
- Add GST/HST and configure applicable Canadian tax rates.
- Display tax amounts separately from the subtotal.
- Store customer and business information and maintain invoice history.
- Track taxable sales, recorded payments and outstanding amounts.
Businesses remain responsible for determining the correct tax treatment and tax rate for their particular transactions.
Information your customers may need
Invoices can include the following information to help customers maintain their records:
- Supplier business name
- Invoice date and unique invoice number
- Customer name and address
- Description of goods or services
- Subtotal and GST/HST charged
- QST where applicable
- Total amount payable
- GST/HST and QST registration numbers where applicable
- Payment terms and payment status
CRA invoice requirements and required supporting information vary with the transaction and circumstances. Check official guidance for your situation; completing these fields does not guarantee that every requirement is met.
Organized records for GST/HST reporting
Invoice North organizes sales invoices, customer records, payment history, business expenses and related tax amounts. Tax summaries help you review GST/HST collected and prepare information for your accountant or bookkeeper. They are estimates based on the records you enter, not filed tax returns.
Electronic records
Saved invoices and transaction records are digital, so your business does not have to rely only on paper copies. Storing information in Invoice North alone does not guarantee that every CRA or Revenu Québec record-keeping obligation is satisfied.
Record retention
CRA generally requires many business and tax records to be retained for six years from the end of the last tax year to which they relate, although some circumstances require longer retention.
Businesses should maintain appropriate backups and retain any additional supporting documents required for their circumstances. Export records regularly and check applicable retention rules before deleting documents or closing an account.
Canadian sales tax support
Invoice North supports common GST, HST, PST and QST configurations. GST/HST is a federal tax administered by CRA, with Revenu Québec administering GST/HST in Quebec for most businesses. Provincial sales taxes have separate requirements. The app does not automatically determine every applicable tax jurisdiction.
Quebec: GST/QST and French invoices
Quebec businesses can use GST/QST settings, enter GST/HST and QST registration numbers, and download invoices with French or bilingual labels. Verify your registration, transaction treatment and supporting documents with Revenu Québec. French invoice labels do not by themselves establish compliance with every Quebec language or sector-specific invoicing requirement.
Explore Quebec invoicingExpenses and input tax credits
Invoice North helps organize expenses, receipts and related tax amounts for review. Recording an expense in Invoice North does not by itself establish eligibility for an input tax credit. The same applies to Quebec input tax refunds (ITRs) for QST. Eligibility depends on the applicable rules and supporting documents.
Export your records
- Download invoice PDFs, including French and bilingual labels.
- Export the invoice list as CSV.
- Download an accountant handoff ZIP for a selected period, containing invoices.csv, expenses.csv and tax-summary.csv.
The handoff includes invoice amounts, paid and outstanding balances, expenses and tax summaries. Where separate tax lines were not stored, GST/HST/PST/QST invoice amounts are estimated from the combined tax total. Review these estimates before preparing a return. Account exports require sign-in; they are not tax filings or a complete backup of all supporting documents.
What Invoice North does not do
Unless a feature specifically states otherwise, Invoice North does not:
- File GST/HST returns with CRA or GST/QST returns with Revenu Québec.
- File corporate or personal income tax returns.
- Determine whether a business must register for GST/HST or QST.
- Provide accounting, legal or tax advice.
- Guarantee eligibility for input tax credits or input tax refunds.
- Determine the correct tax treatment of every transaction.
- Represent or act on behalf of CRA or Revenu Québec.
For questions about your specific tax obligations, consult official CRA or Revenu Québec guidance or a qualified accounting or tax professional.
